At Wisborough Green Primary School we aim to develop an appreciation of music in all forms and genres. Our children are encouraged to become confident performers, with a basic understanding of music theory, composition and skills in instrumental and vocal performance.

We highly value the practical learning of instruments such as ukulele and recorders, and we work with peripatetic music teachers during and after school, to offer a range of expert tuition. Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with their peers, during assemblies and at our annual Spring Concert.

We have links with West Sussex Music, who enjoy visiting our school and sharing in the love of music which is embedded across the classes. In 2022, we were awarded the West Sussex Music Mark for our commitment to providing high-quality music education.

Children are exposed to music throughout the school day. This may include relaxing or classical music during lunchtimes and at the beginning of the day, and at the start and end of assemblies. Teachers also use music within the class to support teaching and learning, and behaviour management.

We follow the aims of the national curriculum for music to ensure that all pupils:

- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods and styles

- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own, with the opportunity to learn a musical instrument

- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

All children across the school take part in musical performances every year. These are:

Reception/Key Stage 1 - Nativity

Years 3 & 4 - Spring Concert

Years 5 & 6 - End of Year Production

In addition to class-based music, we have a school singing group who take part in locality concerts at a local theatre, carol singing in the village and special festivals at our local church. We were also honoured to be invited to take part in the West Sussex Singing Festival at Chichester Cathedral in 2022.
