Hello, Year 5!

We hope you're all okay and are ready for some distance learning! We have uploaded lots of resources for you to use in the Documents section of our Year 5 2019-2020 SharePoint, which you should be able to access, as well as some links to useful websites to help you carry on learning. Each day, we will give you some suggestions of which activities you could focus on (see below), but you can work on anything in the folders or anything you have at home. We will post the suggested activity documents in the Documents section on here (the website) as well in case you are struggling to use the SharePoint.

It would be useful to make a timetable for the week so that you have a routine for your learning at home. Remember, we've recommended to do 3 x 45 minute sessions a day, including some maths, English, spelling/grammar, being creative, helping to make a meal, reading etc. Take some time out to do some fun things too!

Remember that Joe Wicks is doing a morning workout every day at 9am – this will really help to set you up for the day. Make sure you get plenty of physical activity - make the most of the sun while it is shining and get outside!

Please upload photos to the Photos folder on SharePoint or email them to us - we want to see what you're up to! We will also still be looking out for our ‘Maths Champion of the Week’, ‘Rate my Plate’ and any nominations for ‘Friendship Friday’, so don’t forget to share what you’re up to and remember to send in nominations! You can also email us if you need any help and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Most importantly - have fun! This is an extremely unusual, but also very unique experience which you will remember forever. Make the most of your extra time at home and as a family and look after each other!

Monday 23rd March 2020

Good morning Year 5,

I hope you are well and had some fun over the weekend.

Suggested Activities for today:

  • Reading comprehension sent home by Mrs Jones on Friday
  • Maths Code Breaker (sent home on Friday)
  • Research 'The Island' from our geography/English topic - work on part of your non-fiction page, focusing on the area you chose. This will be a great on-going project for you to work on over the next couple of weeks. You can choose whether to hand-write this or complete it electronically. Resources that might be useful can be found in the Geography folder in the OneDrive Documents.

Email if you have any questions or need help with anything and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Mrs Howard

Tuesday 24th March 2020

Good morning Year 5,

Well done for your first day of distance learning yesterday, whatever you managed to do. Don't forget about the Joe Wicks workout at 9am every day - and spend some time doing other activities you enjoy!

Suggested Activities for today:

  • SPAG - have a go at the Correct The Sentence Punctuation activity in the Documents section. You don't need to print this - just copy from the screen and write the correct sentence straight into your exercise book (remember a title). There is a ** activity and a *** activity which is more challenging so you can choose which one to complete. The answers are also on there so be honest and try your best before checking them.
  • Maths - Have a go at the Year 5 Spring 1 Activity Mat 1. Again, there are different levels of difficulty (*, ** and ***) and answers so be honest and have a proper go before you check your answers. Your answers can be written straight into your exercise book - just remember to use a title to keep a track of which Activity Mat you are completing.
  • Geography/English - Remember that you can keep working on your non-fiction page. Resources that might be useful can be found in the Documents section.

If you have any photos of things you've been up to, or any electronic work, you can upload these to the Photos or Your Work folder on SharePoint or you can email them to us.

Have a great day.

Mrs Howard

Wednesday 25th March 2020

Good morning Year 5,

I hope you're all well and are all managing to access the learning activities, either on here or via the Year 5 2019-2020 SharePoint.

Suggested Activities for today:

  • Reading - Have a go at the Travel Far Away activity in the Documents section.
  • Maths - Find the Multiplication and Division Workbook and have a go at the 'Common Factors' activities on pages 4 and 5. For more of a challenge, try 'Finding Prime Factors' on page 6. Click here to recap how to find common factors.
  • Geography/English - Remember that you can keep working on your non-fiction page. Resources that might be useful can be found in the Documents section.

Please do email to share what you've been up to this week - we'd love to see photos or hear stories about other activities you've carried out.

I have an appointment this morning but will be available from around 11am to answer any questions you may have.

Thursday 26th March 2020

Good morning Year 5,

I hope you're all well and managing to keep busy with the learning activities and other fun at home.

Suggested Activities for today:

  • Reading - Have a go at the Ibn Battuta comprehension activity in the Documents section. There are 3 levels of difficulty so you can choose which one to complete - read the information and then write the answers to the questions in your book (don't worry about printing the sheets unless you find that's easier). The answers are there for you to check when you've had a good go first!
  • Maths - Try the Area and Perimeter sheet in the Documents section. There are 8 questions, which get more challenging as they go on, so try as many as you can. You can work out and write the answers in your book. The answers are at the end of the document. Click the following words if you want a recap on what area and perimeter are.
If you want to try a practical Maths challenge, estimate the area and perimeter of a room in your house! How can you find out if your estimate is correct?
  • Computing/Geography - If you have more time available on the computer, click here to learn more about a few places in Africa through a webquest (a treasure hunt online). 'The Quest for the Magic Calabash!' is on the right hand side of the main screen - click the words there to get started. What can you find out?
  • Art - While the weather is nice, can you create some art using natural materials in your garden or collected on a walk. I'd love to see photos of what you create! There's an Andy Goldsworthy sheet in the Documents section if you'd like some inspiration.

Please do email to share how you're getting on at home. We'd also love to hear any nominations for Friendship Friday (showing kindness at home) and Rate my Plate (if you've made a meal at home), ready for the Celebration Assembly on Friday. Let me know by the end of today (Thursday) for either of these please.

Take care,
Mrs Jones

Friday 27th March 2020

Good morning Year 5,

Well done making it to the end of your first week of home learning!

Suggested Activities for today:

  • Grammar - Work through the Colons and semi-colons powerpoint to recap using these punctuation marks (write the answers to the questions within it in your exercise book). Then try the Combining clauses sheet to practice using them (again, write the sentences in your book). Both of these resources are in the Documents section.
  • Maths - Try a 5-a-day sheet in the Documents section (there's a bronze or silver level to choose from). You can work out and write the answers in your book. The answers are in separate documents.
Then have a go at the Y5 Mathematical Scavenger Hunt from the Documents section. You can write or draw in your book, or feel free to add any photos of what you found to the Photos folder on Sharepoint!
  • Computing - I have friends from the UK who now live in Zambia, who've said they'll try and answer any questions we have about life there. If you can access the Sharepoint pages, there is a document in the Computing folder which I'm hoping you'll be able to add to. If not, you can email me directly with any questions and I'll add them to the list that I'll email off to Zambia next Wednesday.

Please do email to share how you're getting on. We hope you have a lovely weekend too!

Take care,
Mrs Jones
